Nursing Program

The University of Houston-Clear Lake’s (UHCL) RN to BSN program is designed for licensed registered nurses with an associate degree or diploma in nursing.

The program prepares students for leadership and management roles while enhancing their clinical and critical thinking skills. It offers a flexible HyFlex format, allowing students to choose between in-person or online attendance (synchronous or asynchronous), with the option to switch modes weekly.

Duration and Format

The program requires 30 upper-division nursing credit hours and can be completed in 2-3 semesters for full-time students or 5-6 semesters for part-time students.

Classes are held at UHCL Pearland, with weekday options available.

NURS 3309 – Role Transition
3 SCH. Focuses on transitioning registered nurses to baccalaureate practice, emphasizing professionalism, leadership, critical thinking, and culturally sensitive care across the lifespan. Explores roles in patient-centered care, safety advocacy, and interdisciplinary teamwork.

NURS 3310 – Legal and Ethical Issues
3 SCH. Examines ethical and legal principles relevant to nursing practice, including value formation and the regulatory role of state nursing boards. Reviews landmark court cases impacting nursing.

NURS 3311 – History and Theories of Nursing
3 SCH. Explores nursing’s historical evolution and introduces key nursing theorists, emphasizing their influence on modern nursing practice.

NURS 3313 – Community Health Nursing
3 SCH. Covers nursing care in community settings, focusing on spiritual, cultural, and socioeconomic factors. Prepares nurses to advocate for health promotion and disease prevention for at-risk populations within interdisciplinary teams. Corequisite: NURS 3323.

NURS 3314 – Trends and Issues in Nursing Practices
3 SCH. Analyzes current professional, political, and social trends affecting nursing. Explores strategies for influencing healthcare delivery and professional practice.

NURS 3323 – Community Health Nursing Project
3 SCH. Provides practical application of community health nursing principles through assessment, program planning, and intervention for populations. Includes a malpractice fee of $16. Corequisite: NURS 3313.

NURS 4313 – Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice
3 SCH. Introduces the research process, emphasizing critical appraisal of research articles and applying evidence-based practices in professional nursing.

NURS 4314 – Advanced Leadership and Management
3 SCH. Focuses on leadership theories and managerial competencies. Students develop skills to critique research and apply findings to nursing leadership practices. Corequisite: NURS 4324.

NURS 4324 – Advanced Leadership and Management Practicum
3 SCH. Applies leadership and management principles in clinical settings, focusing on planning, organization, staffing, and resource management. Corequisite: NURS 4314.

PSYC 4370 – Nonexperimental Methods and Statistics
3 SCH. Introduces non-experimental research methods in psychology, including correlational and qualitative approaches. Covers data analysis procedures for non-experimental studies. Includes a $40 special fee.

Prerequisites

Applicants must hold an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or nursing diploma, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, and complete prerequisites such as Anatomy and Physiology I & II and Microbiology with a grade of “C” or better. A valid RN license is also required.

Admission and Acceptance

The program accepts applications on a rolling basis, with fall and spring start dates. Admission involves submitting transcripts, an application fee, and proof of RN licensure. Applicants can apply as transfer students via the university’s online portal.
